Nneka ,the Nigerian born singer and songwriter has been nominated for the NEA awards in two categories , namely Indigenous artist of the year and Best soul/ New soul Act of the year. The awards ceremony will take place on September 18th 2010 in New York at the Bmcc Tribeca performing Art centre.

Since the launch of her first album in 2005 , her music career has gone from strength to strength. Her new song ‘Viva Africa’ featured on ‘ listen up! ’ the official 2010 FIFA world cup album. The hot sort after singer is scheduled to perform at the Outside Lands Music Festival on august 15th 2010. Born and raised in Warri Nigeria, Nneka Egbuna was exposed to different types of music as a child . Her musical sound is a mix of her distinct cultural background. Her latest album ‘Concrete Jungle’ has received great reviews and lots of praise . she has also been on tour since releasing the album with Nas and Damian ‘ Jr Gong’ Marley.

Moving on to the next Nigerian talented and successful singer and songwriter, our focus is on Asa Bukola Elemide.

Born in Paris to Nigerian parents , at the age of two her parents returned to lagos Nigeria where she credits most of her musical influences. She started singing at a tender age . she grew up listening to artists like marvin Gaye,fela kuti, bob marley , Aretha franklin,sunny ade,lagbaja. Growing up in lagos a city with all the extremes of life from culture to music to religion, just to name a few which influenced her choice of songs and melodies enabling her to become the accomplished , seasoned artist she is today.

She returned to Paris 20 years later where her life as an artist took off. Asa released her first album in 2007 titled Asa with memorable hits like ‘fire on the mountain’ and ‘Jailer’. Her style of music is folk ,soul and reggae. In 2008 she won the prestigious Constanin award for best new Musical Artist in france.

She is often likened to Tracy chapman because of her deep, throaty ,sensuous, distinct voice. Her music mirrors real issues and problems from environmental disasters to political and war turmoil’s.
